Australia and India's Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is likely to have supporters after an easing in coronavirus restrictions in the state of Victoria.

Staggered changes to the rules has seen Melbourne's lockdown effectively ended.

This week sees retail shops reopened and reasons for leaving home scrapped. Come November 8 outdoor gatherings will be extended to 50 people while the 25-kilometre travel limit will be lifted.

The gradual easing of the regulations could come in time for the annual Test starting on December 26 to be open to a significant number of spectators.

"The Boxing Day Test, of course, is very different because that is some way off," said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.

"I am very confident that we will get a crowd at the MCG for the Boxing Day Test.

"I don’t know how big it will be but there will be a crowd. That’s the advice that I have, that’s what we’re working towards."

The 90,000 capacity MCG hosted 73,516 fans the last time Virat Kohli's side toured Australia in what is one of the biggest cricketing clashes around.

India are due in Australia for three T20s, a trio of one-day internationals and four Tests starting next month.
