Khawaja suffered a hamstring injury during his side’s defeat against South Africa on Saturday, with Justin Langer suggesting that the problem could keep the left-hander out of action for three weeks
Matthew Wade has officially replaced Usman Khawaja in Australia’s World Cup squad.
Khawaja suffered a hamstring injury during his side’s defeat against South Africa on Saturday, with Justin Langer suggesting that the problem could keep the left-hander out of action for three weeks.
With Khawaja out of the competition, the World Cup’s event technical committee has approved the change to the squad.
Wade, who was already in England as part of the Australia A tour of the country, was initially called up as injury cover.
The wicketkeeper has been in prime form, playing as a buccaneering opening batsman in the limited-overs leg of the tour.
Wade has not represented Australia since October 2017, when he featured at Nagpur in a clash with India.
Langer, however, has already stated that Peter Handscomb, who was called into the squad as a replacement for the stricken Shaun Marsh, will fill the void left by Khawaja in Thursday’s semi-final match against England at Edgbaston.
