"I wasn’t out of form, I was out of runs": David Warner puts Ashes troubles behind him as Australia dominate Pakistan

After averaging just 9.50 against England, the opener marked his first home Test outing since his ball-tampering ban with a fortuitous century at Brisbane

David Warner was left relieved after surviving several scares on the way to a century in his first home Test appearance for Australia since being banned for his part in the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town.

As Pakistan toiled in Brisbane, Warner took full advantage, plundering an unbeaten 151 while putting on an opening stand worth 222 with Joe Burns, to leave the hosts in control.

The 33-year-old's knock was not without alarm, however, as he survived being caught-behind off Naseem Shah when on 56 after the debutant overstepped. It was a rare incident of a bowler being penalised for overstepping after 21 no balls were missed on day two alone.

Imran Khan then shaved the stumps from the final delivery Warner faced in the day; a second let-off for the former Baggy Green vice-captain.

Having averaged just 9.50 in 10 innings during the Ashes, Warner's place in the Australia line-up was under scrutiny but he admits he never felt under any undue pressure having been "out of runs", rather than short of form, against England.

"I don’t feel under pressure at all," Warner said. "For me it’s about going out there and backing my ability.

"If you get selected or don't get selected you've got to accept that. The Ashes for me was a failure but I know what I'm capable of doing.

"I was on the end of a great series by a very good bowler. There was nothing more I could do. I wasn’t out of form, I was out of runs.

"Today I had a little bit of luck. That’s what you need in the game. Over there I didn't have much luck at all."

Australia concluded the day 72 runs ahead of Pakistan on 312 for 1 in reply to the tourists' first innings 240, with Marnus Labuschagne unbeaten on 55 alongside the imperious Warner.
