Australia have been penalised for maintaining a slow over rate in the first ODI against England in Adelaide.

The home side have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee after being ruled to be two overs short of the target.

Under article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct, player are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

On-field umpires Paul Wilson and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Sam Nogajski levelled the charge, which captain Pat Cummins accepted without a formal hearing.

Australia beat England by six wickets at Adelaide Oval, with half-centuries from David Warner, Travis Head and Steve Smith helping Cummins' side chase down 288 with 19 balls to spare. Dawid Malan had earlier scored a century for England as they recovered from 66 for 4 to 287 for 9.

The series moved to Sydney for the second ODI on November 19 and will conclude in Melbourne on November 22.
