England have called for Rehan Ahmed as emergency cover for Moeen Ali ahead of the second Ashes Test.

Moeen suffered blistering of his right index finger during the first-Test defeat at Edgbaston, and it is unclear whether he will be fit for the next game of the series at Lord's, which is scheduled to start on Wednesday (June 28).

The injury is understood to be healing well, but England will be concerned about the possibility of the skin splitting again and causing Moeen pain which impacts on his bowling action.

Leicestershire allrounder Ahmed will therefore join up with the England squad in the buildup to the Test.

The teenager became England's youngest Test player during the winter tour of Pakistan. He has been preferred ahead of the Surrey allrounder Will Jacks, who also featured on the December trip.

England's Test squad for the game at the home of cricket is now 17 men strong, following Ahmed's summons.

The hosts will have to decide whether to go into the match with a frontline spinner - either Moeen or Ahmed - or to have a four-pronged pace attack, plus captain Ben Stokes.

Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, Matthew Potts and Josh Tongue are all vying for inclusion. James Anderson, who had a quiet game at Edgbaston, could be rotated out.

England squad: Ben Stokes, Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
