Ollie Pope has been called up as cover for England opener Jason Roy ahead of the third Ashes Test at Headingley which begins on Thursday.

Roy was declared fit to play after passing a concussion test on the eve of the game, having been struck by Marcus Trescothick during a net session on Tuesday, but his situation is nonetheless being continually monitored.

Therefore, Roy's Surrey teammate Pope, who is fresh from hitting an unbeaten double century for the county against Hampshire, has been put on stand-by in case the England World Cup winner does not come through a similar check tomorrow morning.

Roy, 29, trained fully on Wednesday and is still expected to play but a final decision will be taken on the morning of the first day in Leeds.

Pope will however play no further part in Surrey's bid to win just their third County Championship match of the season.

The 21-year-old batsman played two Test matches for England against India last summer, in which he scored 54 runs in three innings.

However, a shoulder injury that required surgery sustained at the start of this season put him out of action until he returned earlier this month.
