Nathan Lyon became the third Australian to reach 400 Test wickets on day four of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Lyon, playing in his 101st Test, had Dawid Malan caught by Marnus Labuschagne close to the bat to reach the landmark on Saturday.

The 34-year-old is the 17th player to make it to 400 wickets in the format.

Only Glenn McGrath, with 563, and Shane Warne, with 708, have more for Australia.

"He's been a terrific bowler for a long time for Australia," Warne said as he congratulated his compatriot.

The breakthrough came little more than 10 minutes into the first session on day four, and ended a stand worth 162 between Malan and England captain Joe Root.

Lyon had waited quite some time to claim the one wicket he needed to edge from 399 to 400.

His previous Test victim, Washington Sundar, came 326 days prior to the dismissal of Malan.

MOST TEST WICKETS FOR AUSTRALIA
Shane Warne: 708
Glenn McGrath: 563
Nathan Lyon: 400
Dennis Lillee: 355
Mitchell Johnson: 313

The one-time pitch curator clocked up his 400th Test scalp 10 years and two months after his debut.

He is the seventh spin bowler to get to the landmark after Muttiah Muralitharan, Warne, Anil Kumble, Rangana Herath, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Harbhajan Singh.

"To tick off a personal milestone is fantastic but it's even better to top it off with a team win," Lyon said after the game.

"It was a relief. I've been thinking about it a lot but I wanted to play my role in the team. I was very relieved Marnus held onto it.

"The way I look at it, the next wicket is always the hardest to get - it doesn't matter what number it is. I was telling myself to back my skill."

Lyon finished with 4 for 91 in the second innings as England lost 8 for 74 to set Australia 20 to win, which they managed for the loss of Alex Carey.
