Jofra Archer will be looking forward to getting his own back for short ball flurry, says Rory Burns

SAM MORSHEAD AT LORD'S: The debutant fired in a 91mph bouncer of his own in his first over to give the Aussie seamers sitting on the balcony an idea of what they can expect later in the innings and Burns has predicted much more of the same on Friday

Rory Burns has warned Australia’s bowlers they may regret pummeling Jofra Archer with a short-ball barrage when it is their turn to have a bat at Lord’s.

Archer’s first visit to the crease in Test cricket was short lived, with the seamer skewing a catch to gully off Pat Cummins for 12, and for most of his stay at the wicket he was ducking and diving out of the way of a series of deliveries which pitched in the bowler’s half.

The debutant fired in a 91mph bouncer of his own in his first over to give the Aussie seam trio sitting on the balcony an idea of what they can expect later in the innings, however, and Burns has predicted much more of the same on Friday.

“He copped a fair few so he’s probably looking forward to getting his own back,” the England batsman said.

“It’s quite and obvious tactic. The boys are preparing for it and luckily we can dish out some of our own in this game as well. We’ve got some boys in our armoury who do the same thing so it should be pretty interesting.”

Jofra Archer fends off a short ball during his first Test innings

Burns once again provided the stiffest resistance against Australia’s quicks, making 53 in a minute under three hours and from 127 balls before he was dismissed by a tremendous catch by Cameron Bancroft at short leg.

The Surrey captain was also faced with a large number of short deliveries over the course of his innings, but largely coped well.

“It’s always nice to get in a scrap a little bit. Got two dead in the same spot, which was nice. You get in amongst it and try to tough it out,” he said.

“I’ve batted a few balls in this Test series and they’re looking at different ways of getting me out.

“I think Nathan Lyon ran past me this morning and mentioned it within about three balls.

“I was well versed in what I was looking at and prepared for what I was getting.”

As it happens, Lyon was sitting in the back of Burns’ press conference and later pleaded innocence at the charge.

The spinner collected three wickets of his own to help dismiss England for 258 at Lord’s before Australia reached 30 for 1 at the close.

“It was obviously a decent day but disappointed not to go on, in all honesty,” Burns said.

“It’s tight, isn’t it. It’s a competitive total. We’d have obviously liked more runs if we could have eked them out but we’ve seen it’s kept everyone interested all day.

“It’s seamed, if you miss your length you’ve been able to punish it and it’s just started offering a little bit for the spinner.

“It’s poised quite nicely.”

As for that Bancroft catch - an extraordinary one-handed grab low to his left - Burns says he has seen better in the County Championship.

“It’s probably the second best I’ve seen at short leg. The top goes to Will Jacks last year. YouTube,” he said.
