Brydon Carse ruled out of England Lions tour

The fast bowler, who was fancied to make an impact this winter, has torn cartilage in his right knee

Brydon Carse has been ruled out of England Lions’ tour of Australia with torn cartilage in his right knee.

The Durham fast bowler impressed on his international debut against Pakistan in a one-day international series during the summer, and he was tipped as a potential Ashes bolter – given his height and pace – following injuries to Jofra Archer and Olly Stone.

Carse sustained the injury during a practice session on the Gold Coast as part of the tourists’ quarantine period.

He will return to the United Kingdom in the coming days where a consultant will advise him on his rehabilitation.

The timing is especially cruel for Carse, 26, who was only announced on Friday as a Big Bash signing for Perth Scorchers, where he was due to team up with fellow Englishman Laurie Evans.

Carse has taken six international wickets so far, five of which came in England’s three-wicket win over Pakistan at Edgbaston, when Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were among his victims.

His injury means that the remaining seamers in the Lions party include Matt Fisher, Saqib Mahmood, Liam Norwell and Sam Cook, who was a late call-up to the group.
