Multan Sultans have hired former ECB performance director David Parsons as their spin-bowling coach for the Pakistan Super League.

Parsons, who was the ECB's national spin bowling coach between 2005 and 2007, has more recently been working outside of cricket. He is currently the performance director for England Netball, with this only a temporary hiatus from that full-time role.

But his experience of Pakistan extends to having worked with – and impressed – Sultans owner Ali Tareen previously; he spent a week at the Multan Sultans academy – then the Ali Tareen academy – overseeing a group of young spinners in Lodhran, South Punjab.

Ironically, among those was Faisal Akram, the left-arm wrist-spinner who will now once again fall under Parsons' tutelage as part of Multan's squad.

"I am especially excited to meet up again with Faisal Akram, with whom I worked in the academy," said Parsons, who has replaced Saqlain Mushtaq in the role.

Saqlain, who was appointed in October, has been ruled out by a scheduling overlap. Parsons will be assisted by Alex Hartley, the former England Women's spinner.

Hartley is one of two female coaches – Catherine Dalton is the seam-bowling coach; Hijab Zahid, meanwhile, was announced last year as the first female general manager of a PSL franchise.

"I know the immense work that Multan Sultans put in on talent identification and bringing together the various facets of high performance within cricket, including coaching and sports science," added Parsons.

"This makes working at this franchise an exciting prospect for any coach. I am sure that this is going to be an amazing experience."

Tareen said: "After this season, Parsons, and all of our coaches will be conducting camps at the Multan Sultans academy. I am sure the presence of these top coaches at our academy will produce competitive cricketers and help those already in the circuit to become even better players."

He added that the franchise would look to make use of Saqlain's experience "at some stage in the future".
