Australian spin prodigy Lloyd Pope has signed for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash.

The young legspinner, 18, burst onto the scene in January with eight wickets in an Under 19 World Cup quarter-final against England and has recently stepped up into Sheffield Shield cricket with South Australia.

Pope returned eye-popping figures of 7-87 in a recent clash with Queensland, only his second match in the competition, and now he will get the chance to perform on one of the biggest domestic stages in the world.

"With spin an increasing weapon in T20, we have decided to bolster our options in this area and Lloyd has provided excellent results in his short career so far," Sixers coach Greg Shipperd said.

"I commend the SA supportive approach to our plan to sign Lloyd and trust that we will provide a suitable environment for his and our team progression."

Despite playing his Shield cricket in South Australia, the Sixers won the race to sign Pope ahead of his local franchise Adelaide Strikers, who already have Rashid Khan on their books.

Pope will join up with his new team-mates in time for their opening game against Perth Scorchers at the SCG on December 22.
