England trained under the watchful eye of an armed guard on Monday as preparations for the Test series against Sri Lanka began in earnest.

The tourists took part in a training session at the NCCC in Colombo while their host country continues to go through a consistutional crisis following President Maithripala Sirisena's coup on Friday, during which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was dismissed and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed in his place.

With the country on edge, camouflaged police attended the session, as the likes of Keaton Jennings, Rory Burns and Ben Foakes met up with those players who have been involved on the white-ball leg of the tour.

Other new arrivals included Ollie Pope, the Surrey batsman, and the experienced bowling duo of Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.

The series is due to get under way in Galle on Tuesday, November 6 before moving on to Kandy and Colombo.

Jonny Bairstow continues to be absent for the visitors as he recovers from an ankle injury, sustained while playing football last week.

Bairstow missed the final ODI against Sri Lanka as well as the one-off T20 international. Jos Buttler looks set to fill in for him in Colombo.
