DARREN GOUGH: There are photos of us lifting the trophy, but that is misleading. It was total darkness 15 minutes after the game, and the TV cameras made it look better than it was.
There has been so much talk of touring Pakistan and how hard it is. I found it amazing. I absolutely loved it.
I am a real people person, and because there were not so many places to socialise, I loved being around my team-mates all the time. There was an amazing team spirit on that trip.
It was so dark at Karachi. There are photos of us lifting the trophy, but that is misleading. It was total darkness 15 minutes after the game, and the TV cameras made it look better than it was.
I just laughed all the way through that day. Moin Khan… don’t get me started, what a character.
Mike Atherton’s first-innings century earned him the man of the match award
He started wasting time in the short session before tea and got right up (umpire) Steve Bucknor’s nose. The message came back to the England dressing room that we would be given every chance to go for victory.
We had this mentality, that we were not going to leave this country until we had won. If we wanted to stay out there, we could, however bad the light was. Athers and Tresco gave us a flying start, before Thorpey and Hick edged us towards the winning target.
The light was going when Nasser went out to join Thorpey. An inside edge went for the two runs needed for victory and our dressing room erupted. Nasser gave it everything. Who can blame him? We had ended a 39-year wait for success in Pakistan.
It was a triumphant winter for England captain Nasser Hussain
It might have been Ramadan, but we found some beer and wine for a short party, back at the hotel, before heading for the airport. Most of our celebrations took place in an Irish pub in Dubai.
It was the same after Christmas. We lost the first Test in Sri Lanka by an innings and 150, then won that series 2-1.
That winter was the greatest moment to be in an England team for me. Hick, Thorpey, Ashley Giles and Crofty had great winters, Atherton had an unbelievable series in Pakistan, Nasser’s leadership… brilliant memories.
