Josh Poysden, the Yorkshire spinner, has suffered a cracked skull and will miss the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old was taken to hospital for tests on Monday after being hit by a teammate while delivering throw-downs.

A CT scan showed Poysden had suffered a fractured cranium and some internal bleeding, with his brain also suffering some bruising and remained under supervision over a period of 36 hours.

Doctors have informed the Sussex-born player that he will be dogged by concussion symptoms for the next six weeks and that any further trauma over the next three months could lead to further damage.

Therefore, Poysden's season is effectively over after eight One-Day Cup outings and a single T20 Blast appearance for Yorkshire in 2019.

“I was just throwing at one of the lads and they whacked one straight back at me, in the side of the head,” he said. “It was probably my own fault as I wasn’t bowling leggies, I was just tossing up offies and it was hit back at me.

“I didn’t feel that bad to start with after it hit me. As the rest of the afternoon went on I started to feel worse so I went off to the hospital.

“There were some concerning moments and when the results of the CT scan came through if my condition deteriorated any more, there was a possibility of having surgery or a procedure which involved inserting a needle into my brain to check on the bleeding. I recovered well so obviously that was never explored.

“I feel like the injury could have been a lot worse, so I do feel lucky to hopefully be able to make a full recovery. It puts cricket into perspective.

“I have a bit of enforced time off now so I will spend some time away from the game for next couple of months, but already can’t wait to start getting back into things when the time comes, and no doubt I will be back stronger.”
