York Cricket Club have celebrated the life of their former captain and coach Dan Woods by erecting a sculpture depicting his trademark wicket-taking celebration.

Woods died of cancer earlier this year at the age of 32, but to restrictions put in place by the UK Government to aid the impact of Covid-19, his memorial service was cancelled.

Club members paid for a statue, which stands at six foot, and a memorial garden to pay tribute to the much-loved player.

Yorkshire artist Eddie Roberts wanted to encompass “the spirit of the man” both on and off the field.

“It took a while, but I think he’s there, I believe he’s there," he told the BBC.

He first joined the club in 2009 and after serving as captain for seven years he took over coaching the juniors.

York Cricket Club Chairman Nigel Durham added: “He was a very good captain and a very good player but above all, he was a wonderful human being and an example to everybody.”

“He was probably one of the best coaches the club had ever had”, the chairman acknowledged.

To drive forward his legacy for youth cricket, the club’s soon to be finished pavilion will be named in his honour.
