India captain Virat Kohli has hailed the turnaround the Test team have made over the last four years after clinching a record 11th straight home series win over South Africa.

Umesh Yadav and Ravi Jadeja took three wickets each as The Proteas were dismissed for just 189 second time around, as the hosts clinched victory by an innings and 137 runs in the second Test in Pune.

The success sees them take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series ahead of the third and final Test in Ranchi which starts on Saturday.

It is the 11th series in a row at home in which India have come out on top, beating the previous record previously held by Australia, who twice won 10 on the bounce between 1994 and 2001 and then 2004 to 2008.

Victory also continues their 100 per cent start in the World Test Championship and cements their status as the No.1 side in the five-day format.

Just four years ago India were ranked seventh, and Kohli has paid tribute to the about-turn the team have made in recent times.

"When we started off as a group we were at No.7," said Kohli, who inspired the victory in the second Test with a brilliant first innings 254. "The only way was up. We laid down a few things, told everyone to work hard at practice.

"We are lucky to have the group of players we have in the last three-four years. It's amazing to see that hunger and passion for all the guys to keep improving.

"Looking at the larger picture of the Test championship, every game has value so we're not going to take our foot off the gas in the third Test. No one's going to relax at any stage, that's a guarantee."
