Steve Smith is back hitting balls in the nets after elbow surgery as the former captain's ball-tampering ban enters its final month.

Smith went under the knife after being forced out of the Bangladesh Premier League with the problem but a video posted to his Instagram page on Thursday shows that he has quickly recovered.

"Great to have my first hit back today," he wrote on social media. "The elbow is feeling good!"

The 29-year-old is widely expected to be recalled to the Australian squad ahead of the World Cup in England in May, but his first port of call will be the Indian Premier League.

"From all accounts they should be ready for the IPL, which is really positive," national coach Justin Langer said.

"Dave’s probably a little more advanced but my understanding is they’ll be ready to go in the not-too-distant future."

Smith is on the books of Rajasthan Royals, while Warner is part of Sunrisers Hyderabad's squad.
