Dimuth Karunaratne has been fined £5,689 ($7,500) by Cricket Sri Lanka after being caught drink-driving in Colombo.
The Sri Lanka captain has been docked the equivalent of his match fee for a Test match in the wake of the incident, which took place in the neighbourhood of Borella on Sunday.
Karunaratne was involved in an accident, which left the driver of another vehicle in hospital with minor injuries.
He was arrested but has been released on bail, with his driving licence suspended.
"When you're preparing for an important competition like the World Cup, and we're spending so much money on this upcoming [Super Provincial] domestic tournament, we just cannot tolerate this kind of nonsense," SLC secretary Mohan de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.
Karunaratne has already apologised via his Facebook page, saying: "I am very much aware that perhaps my actions were utterly unbecoming of a Sri Lankan National Cricketer and I do apologize to all of you for this incident."
