County Championship 2021 team guide: Surrey

Amar Virdi hopes to apply winter experience with England during Surrey's County Championship campaign

Surrey have signed seamer Sean Abbott as an overseas player ahead of the 2021 season.

The 29-year-old will be available for three County Championship matches and two T20 Blast games.

Kemar Roach, who has signed up for the first seven red-ball games, will make way for the Australian.

Abbott is free to feature in the red-ball matches against Gloucestershire (May 27-30), Hampshire (July 4-7) and Somerset (July 11-14).

In between, he will remain in south London for Surrey's T20 Blast campaign which begins against Middlesex on June 10.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity to go over and play," said Abbott, who was scheduled to join Derbyshire last term before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

"I’ve had the pleasure of playing with a few of the Surrey guys who played at the Sydney Sixers who have done very well.

"Obviously I’m keen to pull on the Surrey colours and be involved in the setup over there and continue to learn and get better as a cricketer.

"I know they’ve got an amazing setup and a great bunch of lads so I’m looking forward to getting to London, playing some great cricket, and making new friends."

Director of cricket Alec Stewart added: "I’m delighted to have secured the services of Sean for three LV= County Championship matches and all of our T20 group games.

"His all-around skills and the experience of having won back to back BBL trophies will add real strength to our group."

Aside from his six white-ball outings for Australia, Abbott has a stellar T20 record having played in four Big Bash League finals for Sydney Sixers.

Alongside his titles in 2020 and 2021, the right-arm quick has 115 wickets in 94 domestic 20-over matches.

Meanwhile, in first-class cricket Abbott has taken 163 wickets and racked up 1,808 runs in 62 outings.

He struck a maiden red-ball century during this season's Sheffield Shield for New South Wales against Tasmania last November.
