Tom Westley has been confirmed as Essex's new club captain following the resignation of Ryan ten Doeschate.

The 30-year-old has made 306 outings for the club across all formats since coming through the academy system.

He will operate as skipper in the County Championship and One-Day Cup, while Simon Harmer will continue to lead the T20 side.

“It’s a real honour for me to be named club captain and it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to," he said.

“I’ve been with the club since I was 13 and I can’t really put into words how much this means to me. I’ve spent my whole career with Essex so it’s a really proud moment for me and my family.

Thirty-nine-year-old Ten Doeschate had captained the red-ball team for the past four years and led the side in the One-Day Cup in multiple spells.

In his four years at the helm he guided the Chelmsford club to promotion from Division Two, before they claimed two County Championship titles in 2017 and last season.

Ten Doeschate scored 979 runs across all forms last season but his place in the team became less secure.

The news follows the departure of another long-standing Essex hero Ravi Bopara, who left to join Sussex at the end of the campaign.

"It’s been the biggest privilege to captain this Club for the last four years and now is the right time for someone new to take charge," he said.

"I can’t wait to join the troops, focus on my batting, and to give the new captain all of my support in continuing to try to get the best out of our great club."
