Rain sees no play between England and Sri Lanka in Women's World T20 opener

A deluge had hit the Darren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia sometime before the match was due to begin and it showed no signs of stopping - this is the first time since the tournament started in 2009 that a match has been abandoned with no balls bowled

The opening match of both England and Sri Lanka's ICC Women's World T20 was called off on Saturday without a ball being bowled.

A deluge had hit the Darren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia sometime before the match was due to begin at 8pm GMT, and it showed no signs of stopping, meaning both sides were awarded 1 point each.

With the latest cut-off time being 10:27pm, there had been very distant hopes that the rain might relent enough for the teams to potentially play a five-over match.

However, such was the strength of the rain, that the decision to abandon the match was made before the original start time.

England against Sri Lanka was called off without a ball being bowled

This is the first time since the tournament started in 2009 that a match has been abandoned with no balls bowled.

The abandonment means that England and Sri Lanka both sit a point behind the West Indies in Group A. The defending-champions and hosts inflicted a crushing 60-run win over Bangladesh in their opening game of the competition on Friday.

St. Lucia has seen a lot of rain and both England and Sri Lanka will be hoping their next matches against Bangladesh and South Africa at the same ground on Monday do not suffer a similar fate.
