PCB give Misbah-ul-Haq vote of confidence but promise to assess progress after T20 World Cup

After an uncertain start as Pakistan coach he endured a terrible PSL campaign with Islamabad United

Misbah-ul-Haq retains the backing of the PCB despite enduring a tough start to life as national team coach.

Pakistan suffered a nightmare tour of Australia, losing both the Test and T20 series, and were also beaten by a weakened Sri Lanka in the 20-over format.

Additionally, Misbah also suffered a nightmare campaign as Islamabad United coach in the PSL, as the team failed to qualify for the knock-out stage for the first time after winning just three of their 10 group games.

However, there is seemingly no pressure on his position though the PCB will assess his progress after the T20 World Cup later this year.

“Since he took over as head coach we have seen steady progress in the national team’s performances in Tests and T20 cricket,” said PCB chief-executive Wasim Khan.

“We have full confidence in Misbah even now but as is our policy we will sit down and review his one-year performance after the World T20 in Australia in October.

“We will do a complete postmortem of his one-year progress and then reach a conclusion.

“We have confidence in him and that is we allowed him to coach the Islamabad franchise as we wanted him to gain some experience as well in this position.

"You must keep in mind while he is coach of the Pakistan team full-time he only joined the Islamabad franchise few days before the PSL. We wanted it to be a learning experience for him as head coach.”

The former Pakistan captain is therefore expected to be in place for when the team resume their international duties.

They are due to face Netherlands in three one-day internationals before facing England in a trio of Tests and T20s in August - sandwiched between a pair of matches in the shortest format against Ireland.
