Spinner Ollie Rayner has confirmed his retirement from cricket after being released by Middlesex at the end of last season.

The 34-year-old, who made his senior debut in 2006, took 407 wickets during his career across all formats.

Starting at Sussex, he went on to represent Middlesex, Hampshire and England Lions before last term's loan spell at Kent.

Rayner made just two outings for Middlesex last season, both in the County Championship, leading to the decision not to renew his contract at the end of last term.

After five years at Hove, Rayner moved to Middlesex initially on loan in 2011 before completing a permanent switch in time for the following campaign.

During eight years at Lord's, Rayner briefly flirting with international honours after being recognised by England Lions before he helped Middlesex scoop their first Championship title for 13 years in 2016.

But his influence thereafter started to diminish, leading to temporary spells with Hants and Kent.

Upon his departure from Middlesex being confirmed last year, managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: "Ollie has been one of the most popular players the club has had, both off and on the field. He and his family fully bought in to playing for Middlesex and London life, so failing to extend his contract was not pleasant.

"Off the field he had time for members and sponsors, going the extra yard to make them feel part of the club. On the field, in all areas of the game, he produced numerous memorable performances."
