The offspinner will remain with the county until at least 2021 after making his England Lions debut earlier this year

Offspinner Matt Carter has signed a new contract with Nottinghamshire that will keep him at Trent Bridge for at least two more seasons.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough T20 Blast, collecting 14 victims at an economy of just 6.59 to finish as the Outlaws' second-leading wicket-taker.

To cap a year in which he received his maiden England Lions call-up and got drafted to The Hundred's Trent Rockets alongside seven of his county teammates, Carter's latest deal will see him through to the end of the 2021 season.

"There's no better place for me to develop my game than at Trent Bridge with Notts," he said.

"White ball cricket went really for me this year, which is something I obviously want to continue, and I want to be more involved in the red-ball team too.

"With promotion to aim for in the Championship – and also for our white-ball side to achieve what it’s capable of by winning a trophy – there's loads for us to achieve here in 2020 and beyond."

As a teenager, Carter took 10 wickets during his first-class debut at Taunton in 2015, however the emergence of left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White in the latter half of 2019 restricted him to just five appearances in Nottinghamshire's winless County Championship campaign.

However, head coach Peter Moores believes Carter's new contract will see build on his short-form successes to play an integral role for the county across all formats.

"Matt is proving himself to be a really exciting player. He's not fazed by bowling at the best players at the most difficult times, and he rose to the challenge this summer of being one of our key powerplay bowlers," Moores said.

"He became a trusted, go-to bowler for us last summer and he earned that trust from his captain on merit with his performances.

"He's one of a number of young cricketers we have here with really exciting potential. The key for us now is to grow together as a team and build something successful.

"Matt can be a key part of that with both the red and white ball and that's what we're all aiming for over the next couple of years."
