Joe Root has returned to England training after missing Sunday's sessions through sickness.

The tourists' captain felt well enough to take part in his side's preparations at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on Monday, and is expected to be fit to lead his team in the third Test against South Africa, which is due to begin on Thursday.

"He's good. He's in today and he's going to take a 100 per cent active role in training," coach Paul Collingwood told Sky Sports.

"It was more of a precaution than anything else, especially after what happened before the first Test match.

"It's nice to have all the lads ready and raring to go; Joe will be ready for this Test match."

England's travelling party were laid low by a virus in December, which 11 players and members of their backroom staff affected.

They lost the opening match of the four-game series at Centurion but bounced back with a 189-run victory at Cape Town.
