A fractured toe suffered in the nets means the 23-year-old has been sidelined for the three 50-over contests which begin on October 9
Smriti Mandhana will miss India's three-match one-day international series against South Africa with a fractured toe.
The 23-year-old suffered a blow on her right foot while having a net in prepation for the first ODI on October 9.
Seamer Pooja Vastrakar has been called up as a replacement. After the opening game of the series on Wednesday, the series continues with 50-over matches on October 11 and 14.
WV Raman, head coach of the India Women's team, said: "The call will be taken after assessment by the physios in the NCA and we'll take it as it comes along. It's difficult to fix a timeline right away.
"She still needs to get an MRI done, for that the swelling has to reduce. So once that is done, an assessment will be done by the head physio at NCA."
Mandhana recorded scores of five, seven and 13 during the recent T20 series against The Proteas.
India are scheduled to face West Indies in November in three ODIs and five T20s, a tour which Mandhana could be doubtful for.
The opener is already set to miss the Women's Big Bash which starts later this month due to her international commitments.
