'Honoured' Shane Burger announced as Scotland's new head coach

The 36-year-old will take over in March 2019 and joins Scotland from South African first-class provincial side KwaZulu-Natal, where he won three trophies in three years.

Cricket Scotland have announced that Shane Burger will become head coach of their men’s team from March 2019.

The 36-year-old joins Scotland from South African first-class provincial side KwaZulu-Natal, where he won three trophies in three years.

Burger takes over from Grant Bradburn who departed in late 2018 to become part of Mickey Arthur’s coaching staff with Pakistan.

Prior to coaching, Burger played 91 first-class matches across 14 years, finishing his career in 2015 with 3,839 runs at 33.67, and 171 wickets at 24.47.

“I am both delighted and honoured to be awarded this position as head coach of Scotland,” he said.

“The opportunity to work with players who have already shown that they can compete with the best in the business is an exciting challenge.

“Grant did a fantastic job and it will be my goal to move Scottish cricket to new heights on and off the field.”

Cricket Scotland chief executive Malcolm Cannon added: “We are looking to build on notable successes against four different full members in the last 18 months, including the historic first ODI win against England last June.

“We believe that Shane has the skills, energy and ambition to continue that momentum and enable further progress to be made towards our strategic goal of achieving ICC full member status.”
