South Africa captain Faf du Plessis will miss the final Test against Pakistan after receiving a one-match suspension for cumulative slow over rate offences.

Du Plessis was reprimanded by match referee David Boon at the end of the second meeting between the two sides at Newlands last week, which South Africa won by nine wickets.

Boon found the host nation to have fallen one over short of their required number over the course of the match and fined Du Plessis 20 per cent of his match fee.

The over-rate offence was South Africa's second in the space of 12 months - they were also penalised at the end of the meeting with India in Johannesburg - leading to Du Plessis receiving a one-match ban.

The rest of the Proteas team have been fined 10 per cent of their match fees.

Du Plessis will now sit out the final match of the series against Pakistan, which is due to take place in Joburg from January 11.

"The team management and Faf have accepted and respect the decision as it falls under the International Cricket Council code of conduct," a team spokesperson said.

"However they feel there could be a bit of flexibility given the four-pronged seam attack, taking 20 wickets within three days and playing a positive brand of cricket, rather than trying to delay or slow down the match."

The seam quarter of Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander and Duanne Olivier bowled all of South Africa's 121.5 overs in Cape Town.
