Kolkata Knight Riders have confirmed Eoin Morgan as their new captain, replacing Dinesh Karthik.

The Irishman guided England to World Cup glory in 2019 and re-joined KKR during the Indian Premier League auction last December.

Knight Riders have won four of their seven group games in 2020 and sit fourth in the IPL league table.

Karthik was appointed as skipper upon his arrival at the franchise in 2018. His form has been indifferent in the United Arab Emirates this season, recording four single-figure scores in seven innings.

Morgan's first game at the helm comes against defending champions Mumbai Indians on Friday (October 16).

"We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first," KKR chief-executive Venky Mysore said.

"It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this.

"While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes.

"DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner."
