England Women’s captain Heather Knight believes her side is ready to take on Pakistan as England prepare for a new era in their first series since Mark Robinson’s tenure as head coach came to an end.

Robinson, who was in charge when England won the World Cup on home soil in 2017, left his role on the back of a disappointing Women’s Ashes series, with Australia dominating and winning five of the seven games between the two teams.

He has been replaced by Perth Scorchers coach and former Australia captain Lisa Keightley, who will arrive in Malaysia in time for England’s second ODI against Pakistan to watch over her new charges. She officially takes over as head coach in January.

In the meantime, Ali Maiden, who was Robinson’s assistant, has been leading the side on an interim basis. He and Keightley have worked together previously when Keightley oversaw England’s national academy and Maiden was the programme’s lead batting coach.

“It’s going to be a big test but it’s one we’re looking forward to,” said Knight.

“A lot has changed since our last game together. We’ve got a new head coach due to come in soon and we’ve got a few younger faces in the group – exciting players who are looking to make their way in international cricket.

“It’s a great opportunity for players to push for selection for the T20 World Cup in February but obviously the first priority is winning the ODI series.

“Pakistan have had some good results and shown lots of improvement recently so we won’t be taking them lightly, especially in conditions that are likely to be very similar to the sub-continent.

“We’re looking to take a little bit more ownership and responsibility as players and we’re looking forward to putting that into action on the field.”

Knight is one of several England players joining the squad in Kuala Lumpur on the back of the Women’s Big Bash. Knight and Fran Wilson have both been in action for Hobart Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, both Nat Sciver and Amy Jones have been working under Keightley with her Scorchers side. Danni Wyatt was named in the team of the tournament, having enjoyed a terrific campaign with Melbourne Renegades, with Lauren Winfield representing Adelaide Strikers.
