"England got it right and New Zealand got it wrong," says Nasser Hussain on Super Over

Nasser Hussain praised England for their approach to the Super Over after Eoin Morgan’s side came out on top in the T20I series decider against New Zealand.

Faced with a second such contest against the Black Caps in a matter of months following the extraordinary events that settled the World Cup final, England emerged victorious far more comfortably on this occasion.

After Morgan and Jonny Bairstow took 17 from the over bowled by stand-in captain Tim Southee, Chris Jordan then closed out the match with a fine set to New Zealand batsmen Martin Guptill and Tim Seifert.

England’s decisions with both bat and ball were the logical choices at the time; Morgan had been in fine form throughout the series, while Bairstow struck 47 off 18 deliveries in his initial innings.

Jordan, meanwhile, has experience as England’s Super Over bowler in T20I cricket, such is his ability to bowl yorkers. In England’s only other T20I Super Over, Jordan restricted Pakistan to 3 for 1 in 2016.

“In comparison to that other famous Super Over, I thought there were hardly any mistakes in the World Cup - it just came down to a countback on boundaries with both sides getting it right,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

“This one was different. England got it right and New Zealand got it wrong.

“If you asked me who should go out and bat for England, I would have said Morgan and Bairstow. The best two strikers of the ball in the eleven. Who should have bowled? Jordan. Best yorker bowler in the eleven.”

New Zealand, on the other hand, had opted to send out Seifert and Guptill, with Southee having elected to bowl himself over Trent Boult.

“If you ask me about New Zealand, who is their best death bowler? Who has bowled three overs in the match? It was Trent Boult. Yet Southee went Southee,” Hussain added.

“Then if you ask me who are their best strikers of the ball, I would say Martin Guptill, who faced only one ball in the Super Over, Colin De Grandhomme, who faced one ball, and Jimmy Neesham, who didn't face any.

“Yes, Seifert can maybe scoop Jordan full balls but England had a man back for the scoop so you are going to have to scoop or reverse scoop for six. These lads are talented but I think Jordan is happy with that.

“You have to give credit to England. Bairstow nailed it. Morgan nailed it. Morgan nailed the catch. Jordan nailed his last over. That's what we were looking for.”
