England's opening one-day international against Pakistan at The Oval fell foul of the weather.

Rain intervened with Pakistan 80 for 2 from 19 overs after being put in by England captain Eoin Morgan and, despite the efforts of the groundstaff, the playing area was not considered fit enough for a restart.

Play was formally abandoned at around 7.10pm.

In the little action that was possible, Jofra Archer did his claim for a World Cup place no harm.

The Sussex allrounder claimed the wicket of Fakhar Zaman in a blistering opening spell of 1-6 in four overs.

Liam Plunkett also took a wicket, but there was little else for either side to learn from a frustrating afternoon in south London.

The teams next meet in Southampton on Saturday, prior to further games at Bristol, Trent Bridge and Headingley.
