Curtis Campher becomes first Irishman to take T20I hat-trick after claiming four in four balls against Netherlands

He joins Rashid Khan, Lasith Malinga and Anuradha Doddaballapur as the only bowlers to take four in a row and the second to claim a hat-trick at the World T20

Curtis Campher ripped through Netherlands with four wickets in as many balls to become the first Ireland player to take a T20I hat-trick in the men's World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

During a remarkable 10th over, the 22-year-old picked up Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe in successive deliveries.

Campher is the first player representing Ireland to take three on the bounce in a full 20-over international. Saibh Young has Ireland's only other hat-trick, coming in a women's one-day international against England in 2001.

John Mooney claimed a hat-trick for Ireland men against Jersey in 2015 but the match did not have full official status.

It is the second such achievement in the T20 World Cup, with Brett Lee's effort for Australia men against Bangladesh in 2007 being the only other in the showcase tournament.

And on only three other occasions has a player taken four in a row in a T20I. Rashid Khan against Ireland men in 2019, Lasith Malinga, who has two hat-tricks in the format, later that same year against New Zealand men and Anuradha Doddaballapur for Germany women against Austriain 2020.

This is how the over unfolded at the Zayed Cricket Stadium:

9.1: Campher to Ackermann - Bit of a loose start to his second over, sprayed down the leg-side and that'll be a wide

9.1: Campher to Ackermann - Ackermann leans into this one but can't beat the fielder on the edge of the inner ring.

9.2: Campher to Ackermann - Another loosener from Campher, who hasn't got his radar right yet, and Ackermann misses out on some free runs down the leg side. Ireland go up for the catch down the leg side but it is a half-hearted appeal if truth be told.

Balbirnie chooses to review so we'll have a proper look. There looks to be some daylight between the ball and the glove, but hotspot shows some contact and Ackermann will have to go. What a wretched way to get out. Big wicket for the Irish though.

9.3: Campher to ten Doeschate - Plumb! Tendo doesn't even bother to look up to see the umpire's finger raised. Campher finally gets on on target and that's two in two.

9.4: Campher to Edwards - Hat-trick ball. Surely this is close! Campher has produced another ball right on the button but the umpire isn't convinced. Edwards looks nervous and we'll go to DRS again.

Looking again this appears to be crashing into leg. And the technology confirms it! What an over from Campher, Ireland's first-ever T20I hat-trick!

9.5: Campher to van der Merwe - No doubt about this one and Campher has four. A wider ball this time that Van der Merwe goes after and can only play on. The celebrations are near-enough hysterical at this stage. He's taken his time, but Curtis Campher has announced himself on the T20 stage.

9.6: Campher to Seelaar - Whose for five? The skipper ends the fun, poking the ball away, and is off the mark. What an over, which has blown this contest open.
