Scorecard

Leaders Nottinghamshire edged the first day of the top-of-the-table LV= County Championship clash against Hampshire, bowling out the hosts for 226 before negotiating a tricky last seven overs to close on 29 for 1.

England opener Haseeb Hameed fell late in the day to a fine delivery from Keith Barker that he nicked to Tom Alsop for two but Ben Duckett and Ben Slater survived until bad light brought play to a conclusion with Notts trailing by 197 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Somerset v Lancashire

Taunton (first day of four): Lancashire 364-8

Scorecard

Luke Wells’ first century for Lancashire led them to 364 for 8 on an entertaining opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship Division One match with Somerset at Taunton.

The former Sussex batsman struck a powerful 103 off 113 balls, with 20 fours, receiving good support from Josh Bohannon, who contributed 50 and shared a third-wicket stand of 155 after the home side had won the toss.

Steven Croft later made 71 and Tom Bailey 54 not out, while Jack Brooks and Tom Abell claimed three victims each in a depleted Somerset attack.

Yorkshire v Warwickshire

Scorecard

Chris Woakes removed England team-mate Dawid Malan for nine as part of Warwickshire’s impressive fightback during an 18-wicket opening day against Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley.

Warwickshire were bowled out for 155 in a helter-skelter start to this penultimate round LV= Insurance County Championship Division One fixture which is a must win for both sides’ title aspirations.

Division Two

Glamorgan v Gloucestershire

Sophia Gardens (first day of four): Glamorgan 264-6

Scorecard

Eddie Byrom’s hard fought 60 not out pulled Glamorgan out of an afternoon collapse on day one of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Gloucestershire.

The visitors took six quick wickets in the afternoon session following fifties from the opening pair of David Lloyd and Hamish Rutherford.

Tom Price was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers, finishing with figures of three wickets for 44 runs, but Byrom held firm to take his side to 264 for 6 at stumps.

Northamptonshire v Durham

Northampton (first day of four): Northamptonshire 183, Durham 108-4 - Durham trail Northamptonshire by 75 runs with six first-innings wickets in hand

Scorecard

Scott Borthwick fought back with an excellent half-century to regain the initiative for Durham after the loss of early wickets on day one of this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Northamptonshire.

Borthwick was unbeaten on 54 at the close after Durham had slumped to 49 for 4 against some tight Steelbacks bowling under floodlights with Ben Sanderson claiming two scalps. The visitors finished the day on 108 for 4 after a 59-run stand between Borthwick and Graham Clark.

Earlier Chris Rushworth struck three times in his opening spell to put Northamptonshire on the back foot.

Luke Procter though made a gutsy 76, combining in a partnership worth 66 with an aggressive James Sales in the afternoon session. Matthew Potts who was expensive early on responded well to take four wickets and wrap up the tail as Northamptonshire were bowled out for 183.

Surrey v Essex

The Oval (first day of four): Essex 299-3

Scorecard

Sir Alastair Cook scored his fifth first-class hundred at the Kia Oval, and the 69th of his career, as Essex totalled 299 for 3 on the first day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Surrey.

A good-sized crowd rose to applaud the former England captain when he reached three figures just before tea. After dominating a 120-run second wicket partnership with Tom Westley, Cook went on to add a further 145 in 41 overs with Dan Lawrence as Essex built a strong foundation in search of a third successive Division Two victory.

Making his 17th first-class appearance on a ground which holds many great individual memories – he also scored his only T20 hundred at the Oval, for Essex in 2009 – the 36-year-old Cook looked in fine fettle from the moment he drove Reece Topley either side of cover for his first two boundaries in the third over of the day.

There were 18 fours in all in Cook’s masterclass, many of them through the offside and including one memorable back foot extra cover force off Rikki Clarke, and it was his second championship century at the Oval. Three of his 33 Test tons also came at this ground.
