DIVISION ONE

Canterbury: (second day of four): Kent 226 v Essex 32-1

Scorecard

Three violent downpours led to a second weather-interrupted day to Kent’s 168th Canterbury Week County Championship clash with Essex.

Only 41 overs were sent down between the showers as Essex reached 32 for one after 14.4 overs in response to Kent’s first innings total of 226 all out.

A tenacious ninth-wicket stand worth 65 helped Kent pass 200 for a precious batting bonus point on the second morning after Kent had resumed on their first day score of 125 for six.

Edgbaston: (second day of four): Warwickshire 419 v Somerset 167-5

Scorecard

George Garrett claimed a wicket on his first-class debut as Warwickshire reduced Somerset to 167 for five on day two of their Specsavers County Championship match at Edgbaston.

19-year-old Garrett has impressed Sport Director Paul Farbrace with his Second XI bowling in recent months and he will be delighted to see the right-arm seamer justify his selection.

Returning to the action from the Birmingham End, the former Shrewsbury school student bowled George Bartlett for 28 in the penultimate over before the close of play, piling more pressure on the visitors.

Having started the day looking to dismiss Warwickshire’s tail and engineer a positive result, Somerset will now be hoping to pass the follow-on total of 269 and bat for all of day three.

The second-placed side will have one eye on top spot holders Essex, who are being disrupted by weather in Canterbury, and with only three games remaining after this, every point is vital ahead of their final game shootout at Taunton.

Scarborough: (second day of four): Yorkshire 232 & 177-2, Nottinghamshire 184

Scorecard

Yorkshire dominated the second day against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough as they chase a win which would maintain their outside title hopes in the Specsavers County Championship.

The county’s bid for a fifth win in eleven matches started with them in third place and 38 points behind leaders Essex.

And they look extremely well set to maintain the pressure on Essex and Somerset in second having impressed with ball during the first half of the day and then the bat.

Winless Notts, bottom of Division One, started the day on 41 without loss in reply to a first-innings 232.

They then lost all 10 wickets inside 44 overs to be bowled out for 184 before seeing Yorkshire strongly build on their lead of 48 either side of tea.

Opener Adam Lyth led the way with 81 off 143 balls in 177 for two from 50 overs, sharing 108 for the second wicket with Gary Ballance, who is 52 not out. Yorkshire lead by 225.

Former South Africa Test fast bowler Duanne Olivier returned four for 60 from 17 overs after new ball partner Ben Coad had claimed the first of his three wickets with the day’s first ball.

The Oval: (second day of four): Surrey 109-2 v Hampshire 367

Scorecard

Hampshire's seamers enjoyed themselves with bat and ball as the visitors edged ahead of hosts Surrey on day two at the Oval.

Ryan Stevenson scored a maiden first-class 50 adding 114 for the ninth wicket with Kyle Abbott, who top scored with 72.

It meant Hampshire rallied from their overnight score of 222 for 7 to total 367 – this despite Rikki Clarke adding two more victims to his first day five-for to finish with 7 for 74.

Then, on a day when 22 more overs were lost to the weather, Fidel Edwards took two wickets with the new ball in the final session to leave Surrey 109 for 2, 258 runs behind.

DIVISION TWO

Derby: (second day of four): Derbyshire 200, Gloucestershire 396-7

Scorecard

Centuries from Chris Dent and Ryan Higgins put promotion contenders Gloucestershire into a strong position on the second day against Derbyshire at Derby.

Dent scored 169, his fourth hundred of the season, and shared a Gloucestershire record sixth wicket stand against Derbyshire of 221 with Higgins who made 101 as the visitors closed on 396 for 7, a lead of 196.

New Zealand fast bowler Logan van Beek dismissed them both and Ravi Rampaul took two more wickets but it was a tough day for Derbyshire who will have to bat well to deny Gloucestershire victory.

Chester-le-Street: (second day of four): Durham 544-9 v Leicestershire 152-4

Scorecard

Three wickets from Brydon Carse has put Durham in a strong position after day two of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Leicestershire at Emirates Riverside.

The hosts were able to captailise on their excellent performance from day one, recording their highest total of the campaign. Ned Eckersley scored an unbeaten half-century in his first game as captain before declaring on 544 for 9.

Leicestershire's openers Paul Horton and Hassan Azad provided resistance as both players notched half-centuries, but Carse struck three times with his extra pace to reduce the visitors to 152 for 4 at the close, still 392 runs behind the hosts.

Colwyn Bay: (second day of four): Glamorgan 257, Lancashire 544-9

Scorecard

Dane Vilas, the Lancashire captain, led by example with a quite magnificent career best 266 on the second day of their Championship game against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay.

At the close, he had guided his team to a substantial lead of 287. With two days remaining and a favourable weather forecast, the visitors remain well-placed to return to Division One, especially as they are likely to gain maximum points from this game. They will resume their first innings on 544 for 9.

Northampton: (second day of four): Worcestershire 186 & 42-4, Northamptonshire 376

Scorecard

Centuries from Dwaine Pretorius and Alex Wakely and an irresistible new ball spell from Ben Sanderson put Northamptonshire firmly on course for victory against Worcestershire at Wantage Road.

Pretorius made 111 on his Specsavers County Championship debut and Wakely 102 - his first hundred of the summer - to help Northants take a first-innings lead of 190 before Sanderson claimed 4 for 13 in nine overs to leave Worcestershire 42 for 4 at the close of day two, trailing by 148.

It was a second dominant day for the home side who ground out 123.1 overs with the bat to make 376 before Sanderson seized his chance with the new ball in 17 overs Worcestershire were left at the end of the day.

He drew edges from Daryl Mitchell to second slip for 4 and from Jack Haynes to the wicketkeeper for 19. Another one nipped away to flick the off stump of Callum Ferguson for a four-ball duck before he brought one back to pin Alex Milton lbw for an eight-ball duck.

It was a wonderful spell of nine overs, five maidens, 4 for 13 and leaves Worcestershire with much to do to avoid an innings defeat.

Hove: (second day of four): Middlesex 75 & 149-4, Sussex 309

Scorecard

Sussex took two crucial wickets in the final hour of the second day to strengthen their position in the crucial Specsavers County Championship Division Two match against Middlesex at Hove.

Trailing by 234, Middlesex had reached 105 for 2 when they lost Dawid Malan (19) and Paul Stirling for a second-ball duck in successive overs. Their hopes of setting Sussex a testing target on a good pitch now largely rest with opener Sam Robson who reached a 108-ball half-century and was 61 not out at stumps with his side 145 for 4, still 89 behind.

Robson and Nick Gubbins had rebuilt after Steve Eskinazi was bowled by Ollie Robinson off the third ball of the innings, adding 68 either side of tea. But Jared Warner, the Yorkshire seamer who has joined Sussex on loan for the rest of the season, had Gubbins (28) well taken at second slip by Harry Finch before Sussex struck twice in the space of six balls.

Dawid Malan (28) played on to give Sussex debutant Elliott Hooper, a 23-year-old left-arm spinner from Hastings making his first-class debut, a memorable first wicket. Robinson then pegged back Paul Stirling’s off stump for a second-ball duck to take his 50th Championship scalp and complete his second ten-wicket haul of the season against Middlesex.

Earlier, Will Beer made 77 as Sussex’s last three wickets put on 151 to take them to 309.

Middlesex had fought back during the first hour as Sussex, who had resumed on 128 for 3, lost four wickets for 23 – three of them to Toby Roland-Jones who now has 24 victims in his last five Championship innings after finishing with 5 for 70.
