Australia laying the foundations for World T20 success, reveals captain Aaron Finch

Preparation underpinned their Ashes success and now the Baggy Green are wasting little time ahead of hosting the competition next October and November

Australia's men are leaving no stone unturned in a bid to win their maiden World T20 crown on home soil in 2020.

Captain Aaron Finch has already begun notifying players whether they will be required in the white-ball format over the next 14 months.

Since the inaugural competition in 2007, Australia have never lifted the trophy and have only once reached the final where they lost to England in 2010.

It is the only major ICC title to evade their grasp and much like their Ashes campaign Australia are hoping that preparing thoroughly for the task will stand them in good stead.

"[I've had] some pretty brief chats over the last couple of weeks, pretty much just trying to nut out a squad that we think can take us through to the World T20 in October and November," Finch told ESPN Cricinfo.

"Whether there are 24 or 25 players that we think can play a role in different scenarios, it's just about making sure that we're on the same page in our thinking in terms of selection and stuff like that.

"Of course, there are always curveballs, guys who turn up and play well and start the season will really push.

"There's a lot of T20s coming up over the next 8-10 months, so the fact that guys have got more, and I suppose, longer exposure to limited-overs cricket, whether it be one-day or T20 I think it's a really good thing.

"No doubt there'll some guys who jump out of box and really put their hand up for those sides."

On-field preparations for the World T20, which takes place in October and November next year, begin in earnest with a three-match series against Sri Lanka starting next month.

Pakistan, New Zealand twice, South Africa and England all face Australia in series over the next 12 months before the competition kicks-off.
