The defending champions see their wafer-thin hopes of qualifying for the playoffs ended in an underwhelming encounter between the competition's two most successful sides
Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings 97, Mumbai Indians 103-5 - Mumbai Indians won by five wickets
Mumbai Indians won the battle of the Indian Premier League bottom-feeders after overcoming Chennai Super Kings, whose playoff hopes ended at Wankhede Stadium.
CSK could ill-afford another defeat if they were to stand any chance of smuggling into the top-four.
But after being dismissed for just 97 batting first, the writing was on the wall.
They were reduced to 17 for 4 and never really recovered before MS Dhoni hit a spirited 36 not out.
After Jasprit Bumrah's heroics against Kolkata Knight Riders, it was Daniel Sams' turn to lead the way with the ball taking 3 for 16.

There were also two wickets each for Riley Meredith (2 for 27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2 for 22).
Even a badly out-of-form Indians wouldn't butcher this routine run-chase. They had just 33 on the board when Tristan Stubbs was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary (3 for 23) but they quickly turned things around.
Tilak Varam struck an unbeaten 34 to anchor the chase, with Hrithik Shokeen (18) and Tim David (16*) helping to knock off the remainder of the target with 5.1 overs remaining.
The result confirms that neither of the IPL's two most successful sides - they have nine titles between them - will grace the latter stages.
But the outcome does give MI a glimmer of hope in their attempts to avoid the wooden spoon, but they need at least one win over either Gujarat Titans or Sunrisers Hyderabad, and for CSK to continue to flounder.
