Rahane, who is not part of India's World Cup plans, is being looked at as a replacement for Aiden Markram after the South African was named in his country's 15-man squad for the tournament
Ajinkya Rahane is being lined up by Hampshire for a stint at the county in the middle of the summer.
Rahane, who is not part of India's World Cup plans, is being looked at as a replacement for Aiden Markram after the South African was named in his country's 15-man squad for the tournament.
Hampshire will need a new overseas star to fill the void between late May and mid-July. Their initial recruit, Sri Lankan batsman Dimuth Karunaratne, had to be replaced after being given the captaincy of his country's ODI side.
Hampshire declined to comment on the link with Rahane but a report in the Indian media said a letter had been submitted on the player's behalf to the BCCI's administrative body, asking for permission to play county cricket.
It is unlikely the BBCI will turn down the request; Virat Kohli's proposed spell at Surrey was approved last year, while other notable Indian Test stars including Che Pujara and Ishant Sharma have spent time in the county system in recent seasons.
