The Multan Sultans have replaced the injured Steve Smith with West Indies allrounder Andre Russell for the 2019 Pakistan Super League.

The former Australia captain will be out for around six weeks after he sustained an elbow injury while playing for the Comilla Victorians during the Bangladesh Premier League.

Russell will be available for seven matches and is a more than adequate replacement for Smith.

He sits at the top of the T20 Player Index, which measures a players impact by taking into account a variety of contextual aspects. Smith, on the other hand, is down at number 177.

Andre Russell sits at No.1 in the T20 Player Index

Over the past three years, the West Indian has won six T20 tournaments across the globe (more than any other player) and has scored his runs at a remarkable strike rate of 163.5.

"PSL is a quality tournament and I look forward to reuniting with some of the top international cricketers in 2019," said Russell.

"Multan Sultans have picked a very balanced squad this year and I am glad that I will have the chance to share the dressing room with Pakistani stalwarts Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi."
