There was some concern over whether or not the Australian batsman would be okay to continue after he was struck by a fierce bouncer from Ben Stokes
Steve Smith has been given the all-clear after undergoing two head impact assessments, following the blow to the helmet he received on day three of the first Ashes Test.
Australia's premier batsman ended the day unbeaten on 46, helping his side to a lead of 34 with seven second-innings wickets remaining, but there was some concern over whether or not he would be okay to continue after he was struck by a fierce bouncer from Ben Stokes.
Smith was consulted on the field by the Aussie medical staff, and subsequently underwent further tests at the close of play, but he did not show any signs of concussion and will return to the crease on Sunday morning.
Australian team doctor Richard Saw said: “After Steve was struck on the grille he underwent a head impact assessment both on the field of play and later off the field at the end of the day’s play.
“Steve showed no signs of concussion and is therefore free to continue to play. However, we will continue to monitor him on an ongoing basis as per our usual protocols.”
