Derbyshire have lost another to the penultimate ball before lunch, with Madsen bowled off his thigh pad for 24 by Dawson. Suddenly, it's 45-2 and though they still need only 151 more, that double loss has thrown a little bit of doubt into the picture.

With only one over to go to lunch, Borrington's drive has been well held at first slip by Adams off Griffiths. He made 21 and Derbyshire are 45-1.

Derbyshire need 196 off a minimum of 77 overs to be champions of Division Two. Griffiths was last man out for Hampshire, caught by Whiteley at cover off Durston for five. They were all out for 198, having added 56 for the last four wickets this morning.

One more wicket to take for Derbyshire after Balcombe is lbw to Wainwright for nine. The score is 194-9 and the lead 191.

Borrington, having taken a very smart catch, dropped a steepler off Balcombe but, two balls later, Shafayat has run himself out for 81, sent back having set off for a single to Whiteley at midwicket. It's 186-8 and Shafayat hit 10 fours in a fine 190-ball stay.

Bright and breezy at the old Racecourse for the final day of the County Championship season. Derbyshire clinched promotion last night but they still need to beat Hampshire to make sure they win the Second Division and deny Yorkshire the £135,000 winner's cheque

A second wicket in the spell for Whiteley has reduced Hampshire to 134-6. He had the dangerous Ervine lbw with his third ball of the innings and has now found the outside edge of Bates' bat to have him caught behind.

Hampshire have gone back in front in this match and Derbyshire are keeping a wary eye on events at Cardiff where Kent are putting up a bit of a fight. Hampshire 15-0

Derbyshire edge in front by three runs but Turner is the last man out for five, caught behind off Balcombe. Derbyshire are 275 all out with Whiteley 57 not out.

Still two runs short of parity, Groenewald has been caught at mid off from the leading edge for 10, another wicket for Tomlinson, to make it 270-9.

Carberry has been brought on for his first bowl of the season and, with his second ball, he has broken the stand. Poynton is caught at leg slip for 24. Whiteley remains on 55 and Derbyshire are 254-8, trailing by 18.

There it is. 250-7 and that means if they can go on to win this match, Derbyshire will be Division One champions.

50 for Whiteley on his 24th birthday, off 99 balls with seven fours and a six. They are now only two runs from the second batting point they need.

Derbyshire need to get to 250 if they are to remain in with a chance of winning the title, assuming Yorkshire win and Kent lose, and they may struggle now. Wainwright is caught at first slip off Tomlinson for seven and it's 191-7.

Not the start Derbyshire needed. Khawaja has chased a wide ball from Ervine and has edged through to wicketkeeper Bates without having added to his overnight 71. Derbyshire are 170-6.

A lovely autumnal morning at Derby. Sunshine, a heavy dew but quite chilly. We only had two hours play yesterday but the forecast is good and if Kent continue to struggle in Cardiff, Derbyshire could be promoted by the end of the day

The rain seems to have stopped but the umpires have taken the decision to abandon play for the day with Derbyshire 167-5, trailing by 105.

The players came out after lunch but have just trooped off again. It's raining. It's not heavy but it's enough to freshen up the pitch and give Hampshire an unfair advantage.

Usman Khawaja and nightwatchman Tony Palladino have got through the first half hour which Derbyshire coach Karl Krikken said would be crucial to shaping the day

The cloud has lifted at Derby and the sun is shining so conditions should be a little easier for Derbyshire's batsmen

Cloudy and overcast in Derby this morning, conditions which may help Hampshire's swing bowlers. This match is nicely poised and the first session today might well decide whether Derbyshire are promoted

No further setback for Derbyshire as they reach the close on 50-3, trailing by 222. Khawaja is 27 not out and night watchman Palladino nought. That late Durston wicket has left this contest very much ion the balance.

In the penultimate over of the day, Durston has pushed at a wide Wood ball to offer a simple chance to second slip and make Derbyshire 49-3. That was a poor dismissal in the circumstances.

Danger for Derbyshire now. Borrington is caught at gully as Balcombe finds extra bounce and the shoulder of the bat. That's 14-2 and it might have been three but Durston was very lucky to escape taking on a stupid single to Wood at extra cover.

Early breakthrough for Hampshire, with Madsen caught down the leg side off Tomlinson for eight. Derbyshire are 12-1 in the fifth over.

Two wickets in two balls has finished it for Hampshire. Griffiths was caught behind and Tomlinson lbw to leave the away side 272 all out. Wainwright will be on a hat-trick when he bowls in the second innings. After a rocky spell when Vince and Ervine were going well, that's a decent effort from Derbyshire.

A good bowling change for Derbyshire. With the first ball of his second spell (having bowled only one over in the morning), Durston has had Bates caught at slip for 29 with the score 271-8. That's Khawaja's third catch of the day.

Another giveaway from Hampshire. With the third ball after tea, Woods has clipped Groenewald straight to Borrington at midwicket to make it 234-7.

Hampshire are 232-6, with Bates 11 and Wood 1.

The end arrived for Vince when he struck a wide half-volley from Whiteley straight to short extra cover. It was an ungainly end but a good innings. He made 114 from a score of 226-6.

Vince has hit his 18th four to bring up the first century of what has been a disappointing Championship season for him. He has played superbly well this time and moved to 102 out of 205-5 off only 128 balls.

Derbyshire have broken the Hampshire fifth-wicket stand and it was a bit of a give-away in the end. Ervine moved so smoothly on to 61 but attempted a reverse sweep at Wainwright and was bowled. He and Vince (92) put on 136 and the score is 195-5.
