Darren Stevens breaks a fifth-wicket stand worth 53 in 18.4 overs between Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster, who came together with their side on 23-4. Ten Doeschate was the man to go, chasing a wide away swinger he edged through to the keeper Geraint Jones to leave his skipper, Foster, unbeaten on 18 at the interval.  Essex are 82 for five and trail by 144 runs at the interval.
