Four-year deal is reward for Wainwright

By Andy Wilson

David Wainwright, who left Yorkshire at the end of last season in search of more regular first-team cricket, has earned his county cap and a new four-year contract with Derbyshire.

This has been an outstanding first season with his new county for the 27-year-old left-arm spinner, who has gone from third choice at Headingley to a candidate for the best signing of this LV= County Championship season.

The early signs were good, with a career-best 6 for 33 to clinch a Championship win against Northants in the opening fixture of the season, and he has gone on to complete two more five-wicket returns in a haul of 33 first-class wickets at a cost of just under 28 runs each.

“David’s performances have been magnificent this season,” said Derbyshire head coach Karl Krikken. “He’s been a key element in our success so far and a highly popular member of the playing staff with his team mates and supporters alike.

“A spinner who can take wickets or bowl containing spells is so important to any team and David has proved himself well capable of carrying out both roles to perfection, as well as chipping in with handy runs in the middle-order. He’s an exceptional all-round cricketer in the prime of his career.”

Left-handed batsman Dan Redfern has also been awarded his county cap to mark what has been a breakthrough season for the 22-year-old.

After completing a maiden first-class century on the opening day of this county season, Redfern has gone on to make a second hundred and is Derbyshire’s leading run-scorer with 660 runs at an average of 50.76. He has five fifties to add to those two hundreds, the last of them to complete a thrilling Championship victory over Kent.
