Maddy signs one-year extension

By Paul Bolton

Warwickshire’s veteran former England all-rounder Darren Maddy has signed a one-year contract extension. Maddy, 38, joined Warwickshire from Leicestershire at the end of the 2006 season season and succeeded Heath Streak as county captain early in the 2007 season.

Maddy, who stepped down as captain at the end of the 2008 season, has had more than his fair share of injury problems during his time at Edgbaston but he has stayed fit this season and has played an important role in Warwickshire’s surge to the top of the County Championship.

“Darren is a great role model to the rest of the squad; he’s won many trophies, keeps himself very fit, and is always keen to work on improving his game,” said Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles.

“It’s a great asset to have one of the most successful players in the modern era of county cricket in our squad, and we’re all delighted that he’s committed himself to Warwickshire until at least the end of next season.”

Maddy, who made his first-class debut in 1994, has appeared in three Tests, eight one-day internationals and four Twenty20 internationals. He was part of Warwickshire’s successful Clydesdale Bank 40-winning side in  2010 and won two Twenty20 Cups with Leicestershire.

“My desire to win cricket matches is as strong as it’s ever been and I’m thrilled to be able to extend my deal with Warwickshire for an extra year,” Maddy said.

“We’ve got a great set-up here at Edgbaston with arguably the best coaching team and facilities in county cricket. The current playing squad is amongst the strongest that I’ve ever been part of and it’s certainly a very exciting time to be at Warwickshire.”
