Jones commits to Worcestershire

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Worcestershire seamer Richard Jones has ended speculation about his future by signing a new two-year contract with the county.

The 25-year-old from Stourbridge was the subject of an official approach from Derbyshire earlier in the season but has now committed himself to a deal that will keep him at New Road to the end of the 2014 season.

"I'm thrilled to commit the next two years to Worcestershire. It's a special place to play cricket and I'm looking forward to the challenges it holds. We have a young squad and a great dressing room atmosphere and I'm excited to be a part of that for at least the next two years,” Jones said.

Jones’s decision to stay at New Road will come as a welcome boost to his native county having progressed through Worcestershire’s age group sides and academy system.

"We are delighted that Richard has taken the decision to extend his contract with Worcestershire. Richard is a home-grown talent who has come through our Academy system, he has made a good start to his first-class cricket career and continues to improve," said Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes.

Jones, who also played first-class cricket in Zimbabwe last winter, made his first-class debut in 2007 and has taken 30 wickets in nine appearances this season including a six-wicket haul on the opening day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
