Evans included in Northants' match squad

By Paul Bolton

Northamptonshire have included seamer Luke Evans in their squad for the first time this season for tomorrow’s LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at Wantage Road.

The former Durham player missed the first three months of the season with a back injury which required surgery but he returned to action in the second team last month and has been included in a 12-man squad for a possible first appearance since last August.

Northamptonshire have also included experienced seamer Lee Daggett and rookie Oli Stone in their squad but they are missing Jack Brooks and Chaminda Vaas. Brooks is sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury and former Sri Lanka left-armer Vaas has had injections in an attempt to settle down a back injury.

Vaas, 38, has been plagued by injury this season and has played only six first-class matches with poor returns. Northamptonshire’s overseas player has taken only six wickets and scraped together 19 runs.

Vaas is unlikely to be retained for a fourth season but Northamptonshire have greater faith in Stone’s future having secured the services of the former Norfolk player on a two-year deal recently. Stone made his only first-class appearance to date against Yorkshire at Headingley two months ago.
