D'Oliveira set to make first-class debut
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Leg-spinner Brett D’Oliveira is in line to make his first-class debut for Worcestershire in this week’s LV= County Championship match against Sussex at Hove.
D’Oliveira, 20, has been drafted into the squad as replacement for slow left-armer Shaaiq Choudry who has been ruled out with a mystery foot injury.
Choudry, who helped off spinner Moeen Ali bowl Lancashire to a three-day defeat at Old Trafford two weeks ago, complained of soreness in the foot on Monday and Worcestershire are uncertain how long he will be sidelined.
D’Oliveira, who made his Worcestershire debut in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Yorkshire last season, is the third generation of his family to play for the county as grandson of the late Basil and son of Damian, the second team and academy coach at New Road.
D’Oliveira was a regular in Worcestershire’s Friends Life t20 squad this season and has also played in three of their CB40 matches, the most recent against Essex at New Road last Sunday. Left arm seamer Jack Shantry is also in the squad for Hove having been left out of the side at Old Trafford.
But there is again no place for seamer David Lucas and Chris Russell’s impressive showing against South Africa in last weekend’s two-day tour match has not been enough to secure a place in the squad for a possible first-class debut.
