Ambrose injury prompts Johnson recall
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Warwickshire have recalled their reserve wicketkeeper Richard Johnson from a loan spell with Derbyshire to replace Tim Ambrose in tomorrow’s LV= County Championship match against Surrey at Edgbaston.
Johnson joined Derbyshire on a month’s loan only 12 days ago as a cover for Tom Poynton, who is recovering from an abdominal muscle problem.
The 23-year-old Johnson made a favourable impression during his brief spell with Derbyshire and helped them to a Clydesdale Bank 40 victory over Yorkshire at Chesterfield last Sunday with a sparkling 79, his maiden one-day half century.
But Ambrose has been ruled out of the Surrey match with a hip injury so Johnson, who played for Derbyshire in last week’s rain-ravaged County Championship match against Yorkshire, will take his place.
Warwickshire have also included Ireland and England Lions paceman Boyd Rankin in their senior squad for the first time this season. Rankin missed the first three months of the season with a stress reaction in a foot, an injury he sustained playing for Ireland in the World Twenty20 qualifying tournament in the United Arab Emirates in March.
He has spent the past month building up his fitness in the second team and is in line for a first senior outing of the year having played for Ireland in their Twenty20 international series against Bangladesh in Belfast last week.
