Lucas recalled by Worcestershire
By Paul Bolton
Worcestershire have recalled experienced left arm seamer David Lucas for tomorrow’s Friends Life t20 quarter-final against Yorkshire at Headingley.
Lucas, who had a brief stint with Yorkshire seven years ago, was dropped for last week’s LV= County Championship win over Lancashire at Old Trafford but he remains a key member of Worcestershire’s limited overs squad. Worcestershire have also included rookie batsman Neil Pinner in their 12-strong squad.
The 21-year-old, who opens the batting for Kidderminster Victoria in the Birmingham & District Premier League, has yet to make his Twenty20 debut but he made a battling 20 on a difficult pitch in last week’s Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat by Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
Neither Yorkshire nor Worcestershire have ever reached Twenty20 finals day before so the first of Wednesday’s quarter-finals is guaranteed to produce a first-time semi-finalist.
Worcestershire have reached the last eight only twice before, the first time in 2004 and again in 2007, and have usually struggled to make their mark in this competition.
But the arrival of Australia batsman Phil Hughes has helped to transform Worcestershire’s fortunes this season. The left-hander scored 322 runs in the seven group matches that beat the rain including three half centuries.
