Trescothick to make Somerset return

By Richard Latham

Marcus Trescothick is set to make his long-awaited return to Somerset’s team in tomorrow’s Clydesdale Bank 40 match with Durham at Taunton. If all goes well, the club captain will be available for Tuesday’s big Friends Life t20 quarter-final against Essex at the County Ground.

Trescothick spent most of last week with the Second XI testing his injured ankle in two fixtures against Essex at Coggeshall. And, while both were heavily curtailed by rain, the former England opener was involved sufficiently to be optimistic that he is now recovered from the surgery he had to repair ankle tendons.

He made 42 in a Second XI Championship fixture with no ill-effects and would have batted again on Friday had the weather not wiped out most of a one-day Second XI Trophy match.

Trescothick said: “Everything went as well as I could have hoped – apart from scoring 42 instead of 150! I missed a straight one. There has been no reaction from the ankle and I am in the squad for Sunday. Fingers crossed I’ll be fit for the quarter-final too, but I’m taking it one step at a time.”
